Archaeology and Heritage

We recognize the heritage values of Sea Island and realize the Musqueam Indian Band – YVR Airport Sustainability and Friendship Agreement by honouringhonoring Musqueam’s cultural heritage and ancestral lands by preserving sacred sites and personal connections to the land for future generations.

YVR recognizes the deep cultural and historical significance of Sea Island to the Musqueam people, who have stewarded these lands since time immemorial. Preserving archaeological resources, respecting Musqueam's cultural heritage, and ensuring responsible land use are essential to honoring this connection. Our archaeology procedures ensure that all ground-disturbing activities undergo archaeological reviews by qualified professionals in collaboration with the Musqueam Indian Band. This process helps identify, protect, and manage cultural resources while meeting regulatory requirements. These efforts align with our strategic priorities by advancing reconciliation through incorporating Musqueam knowledge into airport operations, promoting sustainability, and advancing respectful land stewardship.

The Chance Find Management training is a specialized educational initiative designed to equip participants with the awareness and skills needed to protect cultural and environmental resources during project activities on Sea Island. By fostering understanding of Musqueam heritage and compliance with archaeological protocols, this training ensures that discoveries of culturally significant materials are handled respectfully and responsibly. Its importance lies in strengthening collaboration with Indigenous partners, promoting environmental stewardship, and safeguarding our shared history for future generations.

YVR's historic buildings are more than structures; they're stories of aviation, innovation, and community. Preserving these heritage assets honors the airport's legacy while supporting sustainable development and cultural stewardship. Through thoughtful planning and collaboration with partners like Parks Canada and the Musqueam Indian Band, YVR ensures its past continues to inspire its future.
