Noise Monitoring and Flight Tracking

YVR has a network of noise monitoring terminals throughout the Metro Vancouver area. The system collects noise data from a network of noise monitoring terminals (NMTs) and integrates flight track radar data provided by NAV CANADA to assess the contribution of aircraft noise at each NMT site. This allows YVR to identify trends over time and share information with the public. A summary of noise monitoring data can be viewed in YVR annual noise reports.

Aircraft that operate in Canada must meet noise and emission standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization and meet all airworthiness requirements set by Transport Canada. As such, all noise data that is collected by YVR is used for information and education purposes only, and there is no enforcement, fines, or change to procedures based on the measured values.

Flight tracks collected by the system are also used to verify conformance to noise abetment procedures, perform trend analysis, and investigate questions from the community.

YVR Webtrak for Community

WebTrak is our online tool that provides information on flight tracks and noise over the Metro Vancouver area for the local community. Real-time data is available with a 10-minute delay and historical data for 90 days can be accessed and replayed.

Certain flight information is not available in WebTrak, including airline and flight number, which remains hidden. Sensitive flight operations, such as law enforcement and military flights, are not displayed.

WebTrak data is not intended for navigational or regulatory enforcement purposes. Limitations in radar data and imaging can skew altitude data, especially at low levels.
