Environment

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has a long history of innovation and sustainability. We are proud to be at the forefront of creating a greener, more resilient future for our airport, the aviation industry, our community, and the economy that supports it.

We recently launched YVR’s 2025-2027 Strategy which details our areas of focus for the next three years. Our vision is to continue building our operational resilience and customer excellence, while keeping an eye on the long-term to better understand and be prepared for the needs of our community. This year, we’re focused on advancing our strategic shifts to integrate digital transformation, design an energy roadmap for YVR, become an intermodal hub, and enable and attract talent.

Our 2025-2027 Environmental Sustainability Plan details the strategic priorities we will pursue over the next three years to address climate change, protect archaeological and cultural resources, and minimize the amount of waste we create. It also details the comprehensive environmental, noise and archeological programs overseen by Vancouver Airport Authority to ensure that we meet, or exceed, regulatory compliance, meet the needs our community, and protect our natural environment.

The 2025-2027 Environmental Strategy includes commitments that will be challenging to plan, launch, and deliver. This plan is visionary, but we believe the targets are achievable with concerted investment, coordination, and changes in culture. Vancouver Airport Authority will support the plan, monitor, and report annually on progress against our goals and the lessons learned, while seeking regular feedback on how to do better.

Become part of the journey

Achieving environmental excellence in a setting as diverse and complex as an airport requires collaboration with the surrounding community. We invite you to get involved and protect our environment through YVR’s various community programs, Aeronautical Noise Management Committee, and Environmental Advisory Committee.

Monitoring and reporting

There are inherent safety, security, and environmental risks involved in operating an international airport. To effectively manage and mitigate these risks, YVR maintains robust policies, procedures, and management systems aligned with our regulatory obligations. We also monitor, record, and report on our environmental performance in many ways, such as measuring particulate matter in our air and recording the contents of YVR’s recycling. We use the data we gather to make sure we’re hitting our sustainability goals.

YVR’s activities are reported annually through the airport’s suite of Annual and Sustainability Reports, which include the Annual Report, Sustainability Report, and Climate Change Resilience Report.
